| The Mitchell 'Sharing the Community's Cultural History' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) is an agreement between the Mitchell Aboriginal community and the Commonwealth Government to preserve and develop the community's cultural heritage through an Interpretive Walking Trail at the former Yumba Reserve. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. | Purpose The Mitchell Aboriginal community is concerned that knowledge of the community's history and stories associated with the Yumba, a former reserve near the town, will be lost with the passing of elders. The SRA provides for the development of an Interpretive Walking Trail at the Yumba 'to share the Yumba story with school children, tourists and the non-Indigenous community of Mitchell'. It is anticipated that in addition to the preservation of cultural heritage, the trail will be an important tourist attraction and will help the community to earn income and develop life skills through work experience, employment and training. Shared Responsibilities Volunteers from the community will build and clean up the walking trail. Local artists and storytellers will work with the community to record stories associated with the Yumba. The community will also promote the trail to local schools and tourist operators, and will approach schools, local businesses and TAFE to organise training and work experience. Through the Office of Indigenous Policy Coordination, the Department of Environment and Heritage, the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations and the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, the Commonwealth Government will provide funds to construct the trail and a caretaker's cottage, and to record local histories associated with the Yumba in both language and art. The government will also fund a Heritage Tourism Officer who will work with the caretaker to maintain the trail. The Booringa Shire Council will provide In-Kind support throuth the provision of the Shire engineer's construction project management services without cost. | ||
