The Bidyadanga 'Making Young People Strong' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) provides for the construction of a swimming pool for the Bidyadanga community. The pool will be a positive facility where children and young people can meet and play, and will be used to encourage school attendance through a 'no school, no pool' rule. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. Detailed Information:
Purpose The Bidyadanga community 'want to support their kids to be healthy and active, and to get a good education'. This SRA is the second the community has made towards this end, building on the establishment of a basketball court that occurred with the first agreement. The SRA provides for the construction of a community swimming pool, which will provide a safe and supervised environment where children and young people can meet and play. The application of a 'no school, no pool' policy is anticipated to encourage school attendance. The construction of the swimming pool is part of the Bidyadanga community's broader 'Getting Youth Strong' program, under which the community intends to offer a range of positive facilities and activities for young people. The next stage of the project will involve the building of a sports and recreation centre from community resources, where activities such as film nights, sports, discos, camping and cultural activities will be organised and supervised. Shared Responsibilities Community members will undertake training to look after the pool. They will run swimming activities, and run the pool according to a 'no school, no pool' rule. The Commonwealth Government will provide funds for the pool's construction and operating costs. The Western Australian Government will also provide funds for the pool's construction and operating costs.
