| The Eight Mile 'Facilities for Young People' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) is aimed at providing better opportunities for children and young people, through the establishment of a day-care and homemaker centre, which will provide access to childcare and better nutrition. The SRA will also provide upgrades to the sports oval and basketball court, which will engage young people in sporting activities. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. | Purpose The Eight Mile community want to improve young peoples' access to good nutrition, sporting activities, and childcare options. The SRA provides for the conversion of a building to accommodate a day-care centre and a homemaker centre where meals can be cooked for children attending the day-care centre. It also provides for top dressing and reticulation of the community sports oval, and a backboard, ring and lighting for the basketball court. Shared Responsibilities The local community will provide labour to convert the building for the day-care and homemaker centre. The Commonwealth Government will fund the services and materials needed to convert the building, as well as a crèche worker for the day-care service once the conversion is completed. The Commonwealth Government will also provide funds for the upgrades to the sports oval and the basketball court. The Western Australian Government will fund occasional-care places for the day-care service. A local architect will assist, free of charge, in drawing up plans for the building conversion so that it meets childcare regulations. | ||
