Summary Information:
The Gelganyem 'Education and Training' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) will expand education and training opportunities for young Mirriuwung and Kija people by matching Commonwealth Government investment in a fund for education and training set up under the Gelganyem Trust with traditional owner contributions.

Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. For more information see 'Shared Responsibility Agreement' below.
Detailed Information:

Purpose

The Mirriuwung and Kija people, the traditional owners of the East Kimberley, want to provide for their young people's educational needs. A fund for education and training has been set up under the Gelganyem Trust, which draws on royalties received through a recently negotiated Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) with the Argyle Diamond Mine. Many of the beneficiaries of the trust live in remote communities and outstations, and have difficulty accessing education and training. The support provided by the trust will include funding for tertiary scholarships, educational travel, traineeships and boarding fees. This SRA will help the trust to meet the educational needs of young people by increasing the funds available for education and training. Traditional owner contributions to the education and training fund will be matched by Commonwealth Government contributions.

Shared Responsibilities

The local community will seek contributions to their education and training fund from other sources.

The Commonwealth Government will match the Mirriuwung and Kija peoples' contributions to the education and training fund.
