Summary Information: | ||
The Areyonga 'Transport and Sport' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) is aimed at improving opportunities for young people in the Areyonga community and generally strengthening the community through the improvement of transport and the development of a community oval. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. For more information see 'Shared Responsibility Agreement' below.
Detailed Information:
Purpose The SRA will provide a bus to help members of the Areyonga community access services such as health clinics, sporting events, and art and craft markets in the regional centre of Alice Springs . The agreement also provides for the development of an oval close to the community, which will give children in the community a safe area to play sport. Shared Responsibilities The local community will finance the operating costs of the bus through a user-pays system. Community members will help clean up the community and surroundings, and will provide the labour to develop the oval. They will also organise and participate in sporting activities, and will encourage kids to eat healthy foods and go to school. The Commonwealth government will buy the bus, and will provide funding for the development of the oval. The Areyonga Community Council will develop a set of rules for use of the bus. |
