'The Kowanyama community is a Deed of Grant in Trust (DOGIT) land which comprises the direct descendants of the Indigenous habitants of the Lower Mitchell and Alice Rivers and neighbouring areas now held by pastoral tenants. These include the Kokoberra, Yir Yorant (or Kokomnjen) and Kunjen clans.

The Kowanyama community has a population of approximately 1,200 (as of June 2001), with about 93 per cent of the total population being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin.' (Queensland Government, January 2007)
