| The Western Desert 'Support for Renal Patients' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) is aimed at improving the services offered by 'Dialysis House' in Alice Springs, as well as at training people in the use of community-based dialysis. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. | Purpose The Western Desert Nganampa Walytja Palyantjaku Tjutaku (WDNWPT) Aboriginal Corporation (which means 'making all our families well' in Pintupi/Lurtija) runs 'Dialysis House' in Alice Springs, a place where renal patients receive dialysis training and are helped to keep their connection with country. Renal disease is a huge concern for the community that WDNWPT represents; it has 30 times the national average of kidney disease, and in some families three generations are on dialysis. The community already has a dialysis machine based in Kintore, bought with money raised from a 2001 Western Desert art auction. This has meant that some renal patients are able to return from Alice Springs for periods of up to three weeks. WDNWPT would like to see more patients trained in full self-care so that fewer patients would have to be removed from their family and country in order to receive treatment. Shared Responsibilities The community, through WDNWPT, will maintain the building that is the home of 'Dialysis House' and will fund the services that it provides. Renal patients and their families will attend scheduled treatments and will take part in training and education on treating kidney disease, with the aim of being able to manage community-based dialysis. The Commonwealth Government will help WDNWPT to buy the building that they currently using for 'Dialysis House', and will provide a vehicle that will be used to get patients and workers around Alice Springs. The Northern Territory Government will fund two health-worker positions to help support patients and their families, and provide information on how to manage kidney disease. | ||
