According to its website, McArthur River Mining Pty Ltd (MRM) is a wholly owned company of Xstrata Zinc. It conducts mining operations at the McArthur River Mine near the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory.
The Northern Territory Minister for Mines and Energy purported to approve a proposal to convert the underground zinc-lead mine to an open cut mine. The registered Native Title Claimants disputed this decision successfully in the Northern Territory Supreme Court. The Court decided that the Minister had not properly authorised the open-cut mine (Lansen v NT Minister for Mines and Energy). The NT Parliament then passed legislation to retrospectively authorise the open cut mine. |
