The lease between the Northern Land Council on behalf of the Malak Malak and the Northern Territory Fisheries Division and the Northern Territory Department of Transport and Works was negotiated in 1996 ('the lease'). It provided for the Malak Malak to lease an area of 600 square metres of river bank to the Northern Territory Government for two years. The lease was designed to enable an ugrade of the boat ramp with fleximat material (Fry c2001).
The area has been the subject of environmental concerns due to boat traffic (Lindsay 2004; Jackson 2004). In the past, permission was not sought for the construction of boat ramps at Browns Creek (Fry c2001).
The lease was not renewed because in 1999 a new lease was entered into regarding the Market Gardens area, which was considered less susceptible to erosion (Fry c 2001).
The Browns Creek land near the boat ramp is a public camping area that generates revenue for the Malak Malak (Lindsay 2004). |
