'The Department of Culture and the Arts is the State Government agency responsible for arts and culture in Western Australia.

The Department of Culture and the Arts was formally established on 20 May 1997 under Section 35 of the Public Sector Management Act.' (Department of Culture and the Arts Website, January 2007).

The Department has several portfolios agencies including:

- Art Gallery of Western Australia (statutory authority);
- State Library of Western Australia (statutory authority);
- Western Australia Museum (statutory authority);
- Perth Theatre Trust (statutory authority);
- ScreenWest (Incorporated association);
- ArtsWA (responsible for the development and support of the arts sector in Western Australia);
- State Records Office, and
- State Library of Western Australia.
