The Junee Correctional Centre 'Wagga Wagga Indigenous Coordination Centre and Junee Correctional Centre Indigenous Inmates Committee' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) is an agreement between the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, the Office of Indigenous Policy Coordination and the Junee Correctional facility to provide Indigenous language programs to inmates, reintroduce an Indigenous Elders/mentoring program and provide resources to run an Indigenous arts and crafts program. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. Purpose The purpose of the SRA is to reconnect inmates at the Junee Correctional Centre with culture and language and to promote culture through arts and crafts. Shared Responsibilities The Junee Correctional Centre Indigenous Inmates Committee will: The Elders Groups will: The Wagga Wagga Community Working Party will: Post-release, inmates who have participated in the program will endeavour to actively pursue opportunities for promoting of language and culture in their communities and the negative consequences of incarceration. The Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, has proposed a contribution of $18,670 to engage a Wiradjuri language tutor for 12 months and to provide financial support for the arts and crafts program. The Office of Indigenous Policy Coordination has proposed a contribution of $10,000 for achievement awards and support for the elders mentoring program. Junee Correctional Facility has proposed in-kind support in the form of computers, arts materials and printing to facilitate the language and arts program.
