The National Assembly is comprised of members elected on a five year basis, while the National Council of Provinces consists of 90 members chosen by the ten provinces, of whom 54 are permanent members and 36 special delegates. The role of the Council is to ensure 'that national and provincial interests are aligned in national legislation that affects the provinces'.
