The Mareeba Shire Council was the local government entity for a large rural region of 52,585 square kilometres located inland from Cairns. As at 30 June 2007, the Estimated Resident Population for the Shire was 19,805 (ABS 2008). Mareeba Shire was formed through the amalgamation in 1919 of the Barron and Woothakata Shires (Atherton Shire Council 2004). On 15 March 2008, Mareeba Shire was amalgamated with three other councils to form the Tablelands Regional Council. |
