    Summary Information:
    The Nauiyu Nambiyu 'Aquatic Recreation Healthy Communities Project' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) is an agreement between the Nauiyu Nambiyu Indigenous Community, the Commonwealth Government and Royal Life Saving Society Australia. The purpose of the agreement is to upgrade the local swimming pool and provide training for maintenance and the conduct of swimming and water safety courses.

    Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding.     Detailed Information:
    Purpose
    To upgrade the local swimming pool, provide training for maintenance and the conduct of swimming and water safety courses, and encourage more widespread use of the pool and other facilities by members of the community. The project will also provide a basis for the coordination of associated long term health and education strategies and programs.

    Shared Responsibilities
    The Department of Health and Ageing (Cth) has agreed to provide $332,389. The Office of Indigenous Policy Coordination has agreed to provide $100,000. The Royal Life Saving Society Australia has agreed to provide $30,000, a temporary project office and ongoing expert advice on the establishment and management of the facilities and water aafety courses.

    The Nauiyi Nambiyu Indigenous Community will encourage and support the 'no school,
    no pool' policy; encourage mothers and children to participate in the under 5's water safety program, and other youth programs; and support elderly participation in aquatic activities.

    The Nauiyu Nambiyu Community Government Council has agreed to promote the project, provide labour and funding for the maintenance of the facilities, and support lifeguard and pool maintenance training for selected CDEP members.

    Nauiyu Nambiyu Incorporated has agreed to negotiate ongoing contributions to relevant community agencies for funding beyond the duration of the shared responsibility agreement.

    Performance Indicators and Feedback Mechanisms
    The Nauiyu Community Health Centre will provide quarterly assessments on the health status of children in the community.

    The Royal Life Saving Society Australia will provide quarterly reports of the number of participants in water safety lessons and lifesaver and pool operations training programs.

    The Nauiyu Nambiyu Community Government Council will provide quarterly reports on the number of days per month the pool is open, and the number of volunteers participating in organised events.

    A Community Recreation Group will be established to monitor implementation of the agreement and members will meet with a representative of the Darwin Urban Indigenous Coordination Centre on a quarterly basis.
