Yilpara was first established in the early 1970's. It was one of many homeland centres set up after a failed High Court challenge to prevent the bauxite mine at Gove going ahead. Yilpara has a population of approximately 100 people and is administratively governed by Laynhapuy Homelands Association Inc.
