The Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), came into force on 16 July 2000. 'The EPBC Act promotes the conservation of biodiversity by providing strong protection for: - Listed species and communities in Commonwealth areas (this includes listed threatened species and ecological communities; - Listed migratory species and listed marine species); - Cetaceans (all whales, dolphins and porpoises) in Commonwealth waters and outside Australian waters; - Protected species in the Territories of Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Coral Sea Islands; and - Protected areas (World Heritage properties; - Ramsar wetlands; - Biosphere reserves; - Commonwealth reserves; and - Conservation zones; - Wildlife species and wildlife products subject to international trade. The Act provides for: - the identification of key threatening processes; -The protection of critical habitat; - The preparation of - Recovery plans; - Threat abatement plans; - Wildlife conservation plans; - Bioregional plans; - Conservation agreements; - The issuing of conservation orders and - The regulation of exports and imports of live animals and plants, wildlife specimens, and products made or derived from wildlife.'
