According to the Te Arawa Maori Board (2006), Te Arawa is a 'large confederation of iwi and hapu. Their traditional area of interest ranges from Maketu to Tongariro in the south. According to the 2001 census, Te Arawa's population is approximately 40,000.'
Andrew Wharehuia Rangiheuea, Poiti Arama Karaka Pirika, and Roku Adrian Mihinui are mandated representatives of Te Arawa and the Te Arawa Maori Trust Board for the settlement of the historical claim between the Te Arawa and the New Zealand Government in the Te Arawa (Lakes) Deed of Settlement.
In a separate settlement, known as the Affiliate Te Arawa Deed of Settlement, Nga Kaihautu o Te Arawa Executive Council represents eleven Te Arawa iwi and hapu. This settlement has not been completed by the passage of legislation as at March 2008 due to the need to resolve certain issues with other iwi. |
