    Summary Information:
The Lajamanu 'A Sporting Chance' Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) was developed between the Lajamanu Indigenous Community and the Australian Government (through the Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, the Department of Health and Ageing and the Department of Education, Science and Training) on 23 February 2007.

The SRA aims to improve community members' physical health and community sporting infrastructure (including the community hall, arts centre, basketball courts and football oval) in order to address community priorities of:
  • providing children with a safe recreational area, thus also mitigating trauma and parental stress; and
  • suppressing dust, as part of an environmental health strategy.

Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. For more information see 'Shared Responsibility Agreement' below.
  • Detailed Information:
    Purpose

The purpose of this SRA is to provide a fence for the children's recreational area, and to plant trees to reduce dust.

    Shared Responsibilities

The Lajamanu Indigenous Community, families and individuals will provide 10-12 volunteers to complete the fencing; identify long-term truant students and work to ensure that they attend school; and ensure that children play within the safe recreation area.

The Australian Government, through the Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, the Department of Health and Ageing and the Department of Education, Science and Training will provide a total of $50,000 for the purposes of this SRA.

Greening Australia will provide a paid employee to manage the project.

    Performance Indicators

The school principal will provide monthly reporting on school attendance. The SRA will also be monitored by the Katherine Indigenous Coordination Centre, and the workshop 'Hoops for Health Basketball and Healthy Lifestyle' workshops will only be attended by those volunteers helping with the building of the fence.
