Summary Information:
The Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing Strategic Plan 2006 - 2010 (Tas) (the 'Strategic Plan') was developed by the Tasmanian Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in July 2006.

The Strategic Plan aims to improve Aboriginal health and wellbeing in Tasmania by building upon other national and state strategies, frameworks and policies.
Detailed Information:
Purpose

The Strategic Plan is an extension of the Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing Strategic Plan 2005, which builds upon other Aboriginal health policy developments such as the National Strategic Framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health. It is aimed at improving the health and well being of Aboriginal persons in Tasmania through greater self-determination over Aboriginal specific services and more culturally sensitive and accessible mainstream services.

The Initial priority areas identified for action in the Plan include:
  • Improving the accuracy of Aboriginal health and wellbeing data.
  • Creating more opportunities for workforce development of Aboriginal people through recruitment and career development.
  • Enhancing cross-cultural awareness to cultivate more culturally appropriate services.
  • Improving networks across DHHS to better manage health services for Aboriginal people.

    Additionally, DHHS is committed to:
  • Employing an Aboriginal Liaison Officer for each of the three major hospitals in Tasmania; and,
  • Developing a network of contact officers within specific services areas (such as Child Protection, Mental Health and Alcohol and Drug Services) to provide advice to Aboriginal people and organisations on service improvement.

    Strategic Directions

The Strategic Directions identified by the plan are:

'1. Whole of Agency approach (within whole of Government context).
    2. Improved Commonwealth/State coordination.
    3. Improved monitoring and evaluation processes.
    4. Addressing recognised health and wellbeing risk and prevention factors.
    5. Improving service responsiveness and accessibility.'

    (Strategic Plan, 8).

    Implementation

The DHHS Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing Steering Committee is responsible for monitoring and review of the Strategic Plan.
