Summary Information: | |
The Office for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health (OATSIH) was established by the Federal Government in 1994 for the purpose of giving greater emphasis to the health needs of Indigenous Australians in the mainstream health system. Following the dissolution of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) on 1 July 1995, OATSIH assumed responsibility for administering funding to the Aboriginal community controlled health and substance use services previously managed by ATSIC.
The Office's aim is to 'provide coordinated clinical care, population health and health promotion activities to facilitate illness prevention, early intervention and effective disease management.' The Office works in close partnership with the Aboriginal community controlled health sector.
