| This Agreement settles the claim by Ngati Rangiteaorere lodged with the Waitangi Tribunal on 5 April 1987, concerning the alienation of Te Ngae Mission Farm, and other matters such as the confiscation of land to make roads and the improper collection of rates for land including Lake Rotokawau. The original claim included Tikitere (a geothermal site known to tourists as 'Hell's Gates'). This settlement expressly excludes the Tikitere claim (which is now subsumed within another claim, negotiated by the Te Arawa Trust Board). The agreement includes a range of measures, such as the payment of money and the vesting of certain land in Ngati Rangiteaorere. | ||

| Deed of Settlement Ngati Rangiteaorere agrees that this Agreement will settle its claims and release the Crown from liability in respect of those claims. A Deed of Settlement is reached once a claim has been registered with the Waitangi Tribunal and has completed the settlement process of negotiation, ratification and execution, and in most circumstances, is accompanied by a statute implementing the settlement. For more detailed information, see 'Deed of Settlement' below. Redress The Crown acknowledges the findings of the Waitangi Tribunal that its conduct breached the Treaty of Waitangi, including by granting title to Te Ngae Mission Farm to the Church Missionary Society in 1854 and then failing to revoke the grant despite the protestations of Ngati Rangiteaorere. This matter has been resolved by the transfer of control of the land to trustees appointed by Ngati Rangiteaorere with the agreement of the Anglican Church and the subsequent vesting of title in the trustees. In addition the Crown will make a payment of $760,000 to the Te Ngae Farm Trust for the benefit of Ngati Rangiteaorere as part of the settlement package. Other measures under the settlement include the return of 'slivers' of land in between property owned by Ngati Rangiteaorere and the highway, at no cost to Ngati Rangiteaorere. Lake Rotokawau is to be granted rate free status. Finally, the Crown is to contribute $50,000 to the costs of Ngati Rangiteaorere participating in the negotiation of the settlement. Signatories Hiko Hohepa, Te Aho Welsh, Amarama Te Kiri, Pirihira Fenwick and Bonita Morehu signed the agreement as the mandated representatives of Te Ngae Farm Trust Board and the people of Ngati Rangiteaorere. The Honourable Douglas Graham signed on behalf of the Crown. | ||
