    The South African Petroleum Industry Association (SAPIA) was formed in 1994 by six of South Africa's refining and marketing companies to 'represent the common interests of the petroleum refining and marketing industry in South Africa; and to promote understanding of the industry's contribution to economic and social progress with all stakeholders.'

    SAPIA members have undertaken to operate in accordance with the principles of Black Economic Empowerment, in particular with the Charter for the South African Petroleum and Liquid Fuels Industry.
