The New Zealand Geographic Board was established under the New Zealand Geographic Board Act 1946 (NZ). It has responsibility for accepting or rejecting names for places such as small settlements and natural features like mountains, lakes and rivers. It does not have authority to name districts, regions, streets, roads or national parks. Its functions include, inter alia, 'to investigate and determine the priority of discovery, to collect original Maori place names ... [and] to encourage the use of original Maori place names'(New Zealand Geographic Board, 2008). |
