The Proprietors of Rotoma No 1 Block Incorporated (the 'Incorporation') held land which was acquired by the Crown for a quarry in 1944. The Incorporation represented members of Ngatitamateatutahi - Ngati Kawiti. In 1989 Joseph Poroa Malcolm, on behalf of the Incorporation, brought a claim before the Waitangi Tribunal which alleged that the acquisition breached the Treaty of Waitangi. A settlement was reached in 1996 (see 'Rotoma Deed of Agreement' below).
