The Queensland Government's 'Close the Gap' Statement of Intent was announced at the 'Close the Gap' Forum on 29 April 2008.
The aim of the Statement of Intent is to improve the health and socio-economic outcomes for Indigenous Australians and thereby eliminate the difference between Indigenous disadvantage and non-Indigenous Australians. The Queensland State Budget for 2008-09 identifies the following six targets, established by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Indigenous Reform Working Group, as a means of meeting this aim:
'closing the life expectancy gap within a generation
halving the mortality rates for Indigenous children under five within a decade
giving all four year olds in remote communities access to early childhood education within five years
halving the gap in reading, writing and numeracy achievement within a decade
halving the gap in employment outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians within a decade
halving the gap for Indigenous students in Year 12 attainment or equivalent attainment rates by 2020.'
This Statement of Intent follows a similar Statement of Intent undertaken by the Australian Government on 20 March 2008 (see link below).
