| The Bunya Wakka Wakka Cultural and Heritage Aboriginal Corporation ("the Corporation") was registered under the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976 (Cth) on 25 August 2005. According to Rio Tinto Coal Australia (c2008), the Corporation was established through an agreement between the Wakka Wakka people and Tarong Mine (then owned by Rio Tinto Coal Australia), and its purposes are to "provide a point of contact between the Traditional Owners, government bodies and other local businesses, while also acting as a commercial front, allowing the Aboriginal community to formally own land and assets." Key areas the Corporation aims to promote include business development, educational programs, heritage and cultural conservation, vocational education, community benefit projects and other community activities. The Corporation's Constitution (2006) defines the "Bunya Wakka Wakka" as descendants of apical ancestors of Wakka Wakka people referred to in the Wakka Wakka #2 Native Title Claim (Federal Court Claim No. Q6032/99) who are associated with, connected with, or speak for, or have responsibility for, Southern Wakka Wakka Country. | ||
