| Six Aboriginal groups in New South Wales and Victoria signed an agreement allowing the Eastern Gas Pipeline (major holder is BHP) project to commence. The agreement involves money, employment, training and respect for archaeological sites in exchange for rights allowing the building of a 740 kilometre gas pipeline permitting gas to be piped from Bass Strait through Gippsland and into southern New South Wales. |

Despite the agreement having been made in 1997, the way for payment was only cleared in 2004 due to a range of legal objections. A Victorian Supreme Court finding in November 2004 found there was no substance to the most recent objections to the establishment of a twin trust.
It is expected that the agreed (AUD) 4.3 million dollars will be distributed over the next 10 years to be spent on a range of educational and sporting scholarships, job creation and other projects. | |
