Ashley Youth Detention Centre is the only secure detention facility in the State for young people who are involuntarily removed there due to a Court order as a result of criminal offending or whilst on remand. It caters for males and females aged 10-19 and it has 51 beds. It is governed by the Youth Justice Act 1997. (DHHS Review, 2005). The Centre has a school for its residents (Department of Education 2009) and a music program provided by a sessional teacher (ABC, 2008). It has attracted media attention for instances of violence and abscondence (DHHS Review, 2005; eg 'Trio escape from youth detention centre', 26 November 2006)). As many as 30% of the population identify as Aboriginal and there is an arts mentoring scheme directed at them particularly(Mundy, 2008; see link to 'Ashley Youth Detention Centre "Mennah Mienne" SRA' below). | |
