| The Djarindjin Community Enhancement Project Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) is an agreement between the Commonwealth Government and the Djarindjin community to provide for improvements to public spaces and the local physical environment to promote a functional and resilient community. Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements were developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. | Purpose The SRA provides for the resources to allow improvement to public spaces and the overall physical environment of the Djarindjin community. Shared Responsibilities The agreement will be based on three central programs. A greening program will be introduced; aimed at improving public spaces, particularly through tree planting and a general community clean up. Similarly, a program to improve public amenities will be initiated, constructing a central shelter, barbeque facilities and improved lighting in the central park. Finally, a program aimed at enhancing recreational facilities will be established, undertaking repairs to playground equipment and basketball courts with added security hardware and lighting in the recreational hall. The Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) has proposed the contribution of $63,500 towards developing and maintaining the physical community environment. The Djarindjin community will organise the schedule of community works to be completed as well as the youth program, co-ordinate a collection of community volunteers to carry out the community clean up and arrange recreational community activities. Further, the existing 'chuck in' fund will meet ongoing maintenance costs. Families and individuals in the Djarindjin community will participate in the community clean up, volunteer for ongoing community maintenance, participate in the co-ordination of sporting and recreational activities and supervise youth programs. The community strengths of the newly elected council (October 2007) and a pro-active approach to producing planning documents for a 'safer and stronger community' can be built on through this project. Performance Indicators and Feedback Mechanisms An implementation plan has been outlined listing target completion dates for key undertakings of the project. The Garndawa Armboorny Aboriginal Corporation will continue to assist the community in providing regular coaching clinics and sporting and recreational activities. Broome Indigneous Co-ordination Centre (ICC) staff will meet quarterly with the commnuity council, administration staff and members of the community. The community will provide a brief report on the results of the project upon its completion. | ||
