The Cape York Land Council (CYLC) is an Aboriginal Corporation (under the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976 (Cth)) and was established in 1990 to serve the Aboriginal communities and traditional owners of Cape York Peninsula.
The CYLC's operations are overseen by a Governing Committee which is a representative body of eighteen community members from communities in Cape York. Members are selected by elections held at the Annual General Meeting.
The CYLC is a Native Title Representative Body (NTRB) under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) and helps traditional owners gain recognition of their native title rights through negotiations and court action. The CYLC also assists traditional owners who are claiming land or seeking to have land transferred under the Queensland Aboriginal Land Act and represents communities in negotiations with resource companies.
From 1 July 2008 the CYLC will also represent the Gulf section area previously represented by the Carpentaria Land Council. This is part of a restructuring of NTRBs in Queensland, following a review by the federal government (NNTT 2008: 5).
