Detailed Information:
Details of the Agreement

The agreement allows for the 'construction of an iron ore mine in the north Kimberley' on the grounds that 'significant employment, training and business opportunities' are provided for Mayala people 'while protecting environmental and cultural heritage standards'. (Koori Mail, 2011).

Pluton Resources has offered the Mayala people 'a stake in the project as equity, royalties, jobs and training' (Pluton Resources).
According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Kimberly Land Council, Nolan Hunter, 'this agreement will ensure the Mayala people have an economic base from which they can create opportunities for their people; opportunities to ensure people have an education and training so they can create businesses and jobs for themselves' (Koori Mail, 2011).

Background to the Agreement

Although Nolan Hunter has started that 'the KLC has a long history of negotiating complex commercial agreements' (Koori Mail, 2011), Mayala elders have generally been reluctant to allow exploration on their land as they were concerned about the effect of mining on their land and cultural values (Pluton Resources). However, Pluton Resources has now agreed to give Mayala people 'the right of veto over any unacceptable exploration activities' (Pluton Resources).
