    Prior to the commencement of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), the Wik Peoples commenced legal proceedings for the common law recognition of their native title rights in far north Queensland. The Thayorre People cross-claimed for similar recognition regarding land covered by the Wik claim.

    The Thayorre Peoples are listed as the Appellants in the second matter in The Wik Peoples v The State of Queensland; The Thayorre People v The State of Queensland [1996] High Court of Australia (23 December 1996).
