Detailed Information:

Native Title

The DDWCAC administered and assisted the Dja Dja Wurrung Native Title claim group in its negotiations with the Victorian State Government regarding native title.

Registered Aboriginal Party (RAP) status in Victoria

The DDWCAC was appointed by the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council as a Registered Aboriginal Party (RAP) on 19 September 2008 under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 (Vic).

Area of responsibility

In its role as a RAP, the DDWCAC is responsible for areas of Buloke, Loddon, Campaspe, Bendigo, Goldfields, Mount Alexander, Pyrenees, and Hepburn. See the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council's map of the boundaries in the documents below for a detailed description.

Initially only part of the DDWCAC's application area was appointed but the area has been extended both on 1 November 2012 and 7 February 2013. See the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council's website for a detailed decision history.

Activities as a RAP

On 24 October 2013, the DDWCAC on behalf of the Dja Dja Wurrung Traditional Owner group entered into a recognition and settlement agreement with the Victorian Government under the Traditional Owner Settlement Act 2010 (Vic). This agreement formally recognises the Dja Dja Wurrung people as the Traditional Owners for part of Central Victoria.

The agreement was the first comprehensive settlement under the Traditional Owner Settlement Act 2010 (Vic) and settled four native title claims in the Federal Court of Australia that dated back to 1998.

The agreement included a Land Use Activity Agreement, a Natural Resource Agreement, the grant of two properties of cultural significance at Franklinford and Carisbrook, Cultural Heritage maintenance by Dja Dja Wurrung People, and Joint Management of six Aboriginal Title parks and reserves.

See the DDWCAC website for a more detailed description.
