The YM People have a Native Title Claim (WAD 127 of 1997) over country that extends from the Maitland River south of Karratha down to Peter Creek about 20kms north of the Pannawonica turn off from the North West Coastal Highway. The claim area also extends out into the Indian Ocean and includes a number of islands and inland as well. The Fortescue River forms the heart of the group's claim area. The YM People are also one of the three Contracting Parties to the Burrup and Maitland Industrial Estate Agreement (BMIEA) with the State Government. This Agreement covers part of the Burrup Peninsula and nearby islands. The Corporation is a relatively small organisation with about 99 members and 3 staff. The majority of its members live in Roebourne, Wickham and Karratha. Others live in Port Hedland, Carnarvon, Geraldton and Perth. Its primary focus is to pursue the Native Title Claim on behalf of the YM People; negotiate Heritage and other Agreements with resource companies and other parties disturbing country; and to organise members to participate in heritage surveys undertaken on behalf of resource companies and other parties disturbing country. |
