    Summary Information:
The Treaty between the Government of Australia and the Government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste on Certain Maritime Arrangements in the Timor Sea ('the CMATS Treaty') is not yet in force. However it is intended that the CMATS Treaty be brought into force along with the 2003 International Unitisation Agreement on the Sunrise and Troubadour Fields (the IUA) in due course.

The CMATS Treaty, together with the IUA, is supposed to establish the framework for joint exploitation of the Sunrise and Troubadour petroleum reserves (referred to jointly as 'Greater Sunrise').

The revenue-sharing arrangements reached between Australia and the DRTL in the Timor Sea Treaty of 2002 remain in place with respect to the section of the Greater Sunrise reserve located within the 'Joint Petroleum Development Area' (JPDA). However with respect to that section of the Greater Sunrise reserve outside the JPDA, the two countries have agreed to divide 'upstream' revenues equally.

The CMATS treaty, together with the IUA, provides the legal framework for resource exploitation without prejudice to the maritime boundaries of Australia and the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (DRTL). Under the CMATS Treaty, resolution of the question of sovereignty of the DRTL or Australia over the area of the Greater Sunrise reservoir is deferred for fifty years.
