The agreement recognises principles including: - Health extends further than physical wellbeing and includes social, emotional and cultural wellbeing; - The right of Aboriginal communities for their input regarding decision making for their health and wellbeing, and ownership over their own culture; - Empowering community-controlled health services and Aboriginal Peoples to act on their own behalf and improving access to health resources will improve health outcomes; - Non-Aboriginal community-controlled health services can be encouraged to deliver culturally safe healthcare; - Aboriginal health data can be effective when shared with Aboriginal Peoples and Torres Strait Islanders and their representative bodies where the treatment of such data must be consistent with national Data Principles and NACCHO data protocols; and - Building capacity within health services and communities is an important element in Aboriginal health issues. Agreed collaborative efforts between NACCHO and ACRRM to improve indigenous health outcomes include: consultation, advocacy and representation; and defining standards for general practice training for Aboriginal health. Processes for this effort include, but are not limited to: Consultation, advocacy and representation, involving regular consultation; representation on appropriate committee and advisory structures; a supportive approach to enable cross learning; and working in partnership to ensure accessibility, acceptability, and effectiveness in terms of health outcomes are examined in evaluations of programs. Defining standards for general practice training for Aboriginal health, involving NACCHO providing advice to set, implement and monitor general practice standards; ACRRM undertaking activities that foster the scientific body of knowledge of health of Aboriginal Peoples; and ACRRM in conjunction with NACCHO seeking to develop a proposal for an online national inventory of ACCHSs to support their teaching practices. The parties agree that representatives of each organisation will meet regularly. |
