| The Aboriginal Housing and Infrastructure Council (AHIC) was formed as a result of the Agreement for the Provision of Housing Infrastructure for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in Western Australia (July 2002 - June 2007). It replaced the Aboriginal Housing Board (AHB), which was disbanded in May 2002. | ||

The roles of the AHIC are stated in the Agreement for the Provision of Housing, Infrastructure and Essential Services for Indigenous People in Western Australia (November 2005 - June 2008). The AHIC is recognised 'as the principal source of advice on policies and strategies to improve housing, infrastructure and essential services outcomes for Indigenous people in Western Australia' (clause 8 of the Agreement). Its specific functions involve: - providing strategic policy advice to the Western Australian Government regarding Indigenous housing, essential services and infrastructure; - developing a three-year strategic plan; - providing advice and advocacy for improving Indigenous access to mainstream housing; and - providing advice to the State Housing Commission Board. The AHIC is responsible to the Minister for Housing and Works (Western Australia). | ||
