Summary Information:
The Federal Court of Australia was established by a Commonwealth Act of Parliament (the Federal Court of Australia Act 1976) in 1976. The Court began to exercise its jurisdiction on 1 February 1977. It assumed the entire jurisdiction of the Australian Industrial Court and of the Federal Court of Bankruptcy, as well as jurisdiction previously exercised in part by the High Court of Australia. The Federal Court is a superior court of record and a court of law and equity. It sits in all capital cities throughout Australia and at other places on occasion.

The Court consists of a Chief Justice and other judges as appointed. The Court has both original and substantial appellate jurisdiction. It is able to hear appeals from single judges of the Court as well as from the Federal Magistrate's Court in non-family law matters. It also exercises appellate jurisdiction in criminal and civil matters on appeal from the Supreme Court of Norfolk Island. The Federal Court also deals with native title claims and consent determinations.
