Summary Information: | ||
The object of the Rights in Water and Irrigation Act 1914 (WA) (the Act) is: '(a) to provide for the management of water resources, and in particular — (i) for their sustainable use and development to meet the needs of current and future users; and (ii) for the protection of their ecosystems and the environment in which water resources are situated, including by the regulation of activities detrimental to them; (b) to promote the orderly, equitable and efficient use of water resources; (c) to foster consultation with members of local communities in the local administration of this Part, and to enable them to participate in that administration; and (d) to assist the integration of the management of water resources with the management of other natural resources.' (Rights in Water and Irrigation Act 1914 (WA)). Amendments to the Act which came into operation on 10 January 2001 establish a licence trading system of water rights in Western Australia. The amendments implement the national water policy agreed to by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) in 1994. |
