The Post and Telegraph Act 1901 (Cth) (the Act) formed a part of the package of legislation passed by the Australian Federal Parliament in 1901 designed to exclude non-European migrants. Section 15 of the Act provided that ships carrying Australian mail (and thus subsidised by the Commonwealth), should only employ white labour. The Immigration Restriction Act and the Pacific Islander Labourers Act also contributed to what was a significant set of legal instruments which shaped immigration policy at the time. |
