The Mineral Resources Act 1989 (Qld) is an Act 'to provide for the assessment, development and utilisation of mineral resources to the maximum extent practicable consistent with sound economic and land use management'. Its objectives include the facilitation of mineral prospecting and exploration; the minimisation of land use conflict with respect to prospecting, exploration and mining; the encouragement of environmental responsibility in such activities; ensuring an appropriate financial return to the State from mining; and the provision of an administrative structure for the regulation of all such activities (see s 2). The purpose of the Act is to encourage and facilitate and explore mining of minerals, enhance knowledge of mineral resources of the state, minimise land use conflict with respect to prospecting, exploring and mining and ensure an appropriate financial return to the state of mining.
