The Wet Tropics Management Authority commenced operations in 1991 in Cairns. It is a Body Corporate with statutory powers and falls within the portfolio of the Queensland Minister for the Environment. It has a Board of Directors, five of whom are private citizens working in a part-time capacity. The Board brings a coordinated approach to managing Australia's tropical rainforests. Its aim is to achieve world heritage protection through partnership with the wider community. The Board must, in performing its function, consider Aboriginal tradition and liaise and cooperate with Aboriginal people concerned with the area. It must also perform its functions in a way that is consistent with the objectives and principles of the National Strategy for Ecologically Sustainable Development. |
