Wattleridge was declared an Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) in July 2001 and covers an area of 480 hectares in the Clarence River catchment. The area is a highly significant cultural site for the local Banbai Aboriginal people. The Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC) purchased the property on behalf of Banbai Land Entreprises Ltd in 1998. The area contains remnant bushland associated with granitic outcrops in the New England region.
Detailed Information:
The IPA is important for its cultural and ecological values. Extensive evidence of Aboriginal occupation is present including axe-grinding sites, rock shelters and rock art. Many rare or endangered plant and animal species also occur across the IPA. The property is to be managed as five separate zones, each with different objectives which are identified by the Plan of Management. A comprehensive Fire Management Plan will also be developed under the Plan of Management. Proposals for environmentally sustainable tourism and business ventures will also be developed.
