Summary Information:

The Marine Parks Act 2004 (Qld) is an 'Act to provide for marine parks and the conservation of the marine environment, and for other purposes' (long title). The main purpose of the Act is to provide for the conservation of the marine environment (sees s5(1)). To achieve this purpose the Act provides for, among other things;

  • the declaration of marine parks;
  • the establishment of zones and protection areas and zoning and management plans;
  • the cooperative involvement of public authorities, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities;
  • coordination of strategies with Australia's international obligations and other environment conservation legislation;
  • recognition of the cultural, economic, environmental and social relationships between marine parks and other areas; and
  • providing opportunities for public appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of the marine environment.
