The Council is centred on the Murrumbidgee River and the Shire includes the townships of Barellan and Grong Grong. The present Shire is similar to the original 1906 boundaries. with the exception of the western part that was reassigned to Leeton in 1929-30.

An amalgamation of the previously known Narrandera Municipality and part of the Yanko Shire.

The Narrandera Shire was formed on 1 January 1960. The Council is community focused and is committed to providing quality services for residents while building a bright future for the Shire. Narrandera Shire Council is structured into and provides executive services, corporate and community services and infrastructure services.
