The Accord is viewed as a living document. It will be an evolving process that addresses issues such as reconciliation, self-determination and sustained economic development for the Indigenous residents of Ipswich. It will be subject to regular review. The Accord follows upon the establishment of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation in 1991, the signing of the 'National Commitment to Improved Outcomes in the Delivery of Programs and Services for Aboriginal Peoples and Torres Strait Islanders' by the Australian Local Government Association in 1992, and the 1995 resolution of the Local Government Ministers Conference on the need to improve services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through a whole of government and community approach. | ||

The Accord has brought the following benefits: · Formal recognition, respect and support for the endeavours of the Indigenous Australian community in Ipswich to redress inequalities · Enhanced economic development and quality of life for the Indigenous Australian community in the area through community and cultural relations · Positive profiling of Ipswich City Council as an innovative and progressive Local Government Council which is developing a role in the community beyond the provision and maintenance of basic infrastructure |
