Summary Information:
The Bayulu Community has signed a Shared Responsibility Agreement (SRA) to encourage community participation. The 'Building the Community' SRA also provides a women's centre to ensure access to community resources.

Shared Responsibility Agreements are agreements between governments and Indigenous communities to provide discretionary funding in return for community obligations. The new arrangements developed from an initiative of the Council of Australian Governments and replace the previous ATSIC system of funding. For more information see 'Shared Responsibility Agreement' below.
Detailed Information:
Purpose

The community at Bayulu has established priorities for the future. These include:
- better health;
- improved school attendance and education outcomes;
- a safer and cleaner community
- better sport and recreation activities for young people;
- a facility for women;
- better community governance through training; and
- the maintenance of language, lore and culture.

The 'Building a Sense of Community' SRA works across these aims, but specifically provides a facility for women. Under the SRA, a space will be renovated and equipped to become a premises for women. The Centre will house day care for young children, a breakfast and lunch program and a women's program.

Shared Responsibilities

The Commonwealth Government will contribute $200,000 to renovate the premises and purchase equipment. Staff members from the local committee will undergo TAFE training.

The community at Bayulu will organise healthy eating programs and recreational and cultural activities. They will supervise activities and the use of community resources, and encourage participation by all.

The Bayulu SRA is administered by the Derby Indigenous Coordination Centre.
