Pukatja Indigenous Community is located 'in the Musgrave Ranges in South Australia about 30km south of the Northern Territory border. It lies approximately 330 km south west of Alice Springs as the crow flies.'

The community is an Anangu community whose land is held under the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land Rights Act 1981 (SA). According to www.waru.org, kinship ties are across three groups: the Pitjantjatjara, Ngaanyatjarra and Yankunytjatjara peoples.
