The Elcho Island Aboriginal Community consists predominately of Yolngu people, though there are over 22 different tribal groups and significant variations in the dialects spoken by these groups.
The majority of the community reside in Galiwin'ku, the island's main community and second largest community in the Northern Territory with a population of over 2000 people.
Also on the island are a signficant number of outstations, including Matamata, Maparru, and Gariyak on which live a number of different tribal groups. The most commonly spoken languages are Djambarrpuyngu and Gupapuyngu (both Yolngu Matha languages). |
