| The Queensland Coast Islands Declaratory Act 1985 purported to extinguish any rights and interests that the Meriam (or Murray Islanders) may have had before its enactment. In 1998, the High Court decided by a majority that the Act was inconsistent with the Commonwealth's Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Mabo v Queensland (No 1) (1988) 83 ALR 14). |
